Olsen prepares for big finale
The E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour has begun with a bang after Kym Olsen has won six of the first seven events on the QLD Swing.

After starting with an outright victory in the Surfers Paradise Legends Pro Am, Olsen has also won tournaments at Sanctuary Cove, Mt Warren Park, City Golf Club, Dalby and Chinchilla, with his only blemish being at the Gold Coast Senior Open where he finished in a tie for 16th.

Olsen has had a stellar amateur career including victories in the Masters division of the 2010 QLD and VIC Mid Amateur Championships, as well as being the 2010 National Club Champion and 2007 National Golf Club Open Champion. He also qualified for the US Amateur in 1997 as well as being a Sectional Qualifier for both the 1996 and 1997 US Opens.

For Olsen it has been a dream start to his Professional career and, after winning the Legends Tour Qualifying School by an incredible 14 shots earlier this year, he hasn’t looked back.

“I didn’t have too many expectations when I turned professional because when you’re teeing it up with the likes of Mike Ferguson, Wayne Grady, Brian Jones, Jeff Woodland and alike, it would be easy to be overwhelmed by the challenge”.

With the $17,500 Jandowae Legends Pro Am to conclude the Darling Downs swing over the weekend, the tour will then turn it’s focus to Hervey Bay for the Fraser Coast Legends Classic, before returning to South East Queensland ready for the QLD leg to finish at Redland Bay Golf Club. After staging the QLD Senior PGA Championship since 2004, Redland Bay Golf Club have enjoyed the fruits of seeing the likes of Mike Harwood and Rodger David win the title at their club.

“Our Members talk about their experience of playing the QLD Senior PGA Championship for most of the year and it is certainly the event our club looks forward to hosting. It has also helped us to market our venue far and wide because of the great word of mouth that occurs after the professionals have been to the facility,” said Redland Bay and 2011 Club Manager of the Year, Aaron Muirhead.

Garry Merrick, Ossie Moore and Lyndsay Stephen are just some of the big names competing in the final QLD event and therefore Kym Olsen will not have it all of his own way, fully aware of the challenges of the intense schedule

“You would love to win every event you play and although I have been lucky enough to go pretty close over the last couple of weeks, the title of QLD Senior PGA Champion is certainly the one we are all looking for. The schedule is laid out really well so we can stay fresh without having too many non tournament days but the one thing I have against me is that I am playing many of these courses for the first time and although far from an excuse, I am just hoping to give myself the best opportunity come the back nine of the final round”.

The QLD Senior PGA Championship will take place over 36 holes from 23-24 August and with only a few amateur positions and sponsorship packages available, it is the perfect opportunity to play with some of the greats of our game.
