Presidents Blog April 2011

The Club has been fortunate to have been able to overcome the losses from wet weather in the first half of the year. Although there is continuing inclement weather, the course has withstood most and we have had minimal days lost by wet weather since Christmas.

The Club is now not reliant on golf revenue alone. For the last five years, the Club has undertaken development within the clubhouse and now has a first class venue for in-house dining, weddings and other functions. The revenue from weddings and functions has, in part, offset the losses from golfing.

It is unfortunate to see two Gold Coast golf courses going into voluntary receivership. It is an indication that, to survive these times of continuous inclement weather and the GFC, clubs must diversify to survive.

Don't forget the Open Day on this coming Sunday afternoon. It is an opportunity for prospective members to find out more about our golfcourse, try it out and attend a Golf clinic (booking essential). In addition, there is entertainment and presentation of wedding and function facilities.

I would like to thank the members who put a massive effort into making the US Masters Calcutta event on Saturday, 9 April 2011 a huge success. Following this great success, we have decided to run another Calcutta event for the British Open so keep an eye out for the information regarding this event.
I would also like to thank the staff at the Redland Bay Golf Club for their efforts in March 2011. This was a massive month in which we delivered 5 weddings, 3 conferences, 3 lunch events, 1 party, 2 corporate golf days and a Black Marker Challenge event along with our regular golf events. Thank you for your support this year as there have been events that have impacted on you all but I do believe you all have acted very professionally with all that was happening in the club. Hopefully, now we can get back to business!

Thought of the Week

“Things do not just happen, they are made to happen.”  John F. Kennedy

Sooner or later each of us has to deal with a life outcome that we didn’t anticipate, plan for or expect.  Life is filled with surprises both negative and positive.  It is interesting to note however how many of these so-called negative outcomes came from positive causes while some of the positive outcomes came from negative causes.

Life can be perceived as a wonderful adventure or a series of - one negative life drama and trauma after another. Every life has its struggles with: growth, understanding, acceptance, tolerance, adversity, discouragement and too many more to list.  Every life also has its share of: achievement, love, friendship, joy, blessings, success as well as many others.

In the end, life outcomes are the result of several factors of which some are listed below:

-Your life’s decisions and choices along the way -Divine providence -Luck, timing or synchronicity -Your personal perspective -Your working life philosophy or approach to circumstances, events and  people.
-Your goals, plans, dreams, hopes and desires -Your early environment and conditioning -Your self-esteem, self-acceptance and self-love -Your need to learn certain life lessons -Your attitudes

No one can predict the future of a life.  No one knows how his/her life will turn out next year or in 20 years.  No one is privy in advance, to all of the events, circumstances, people and conditions that will cross his/her path as his/her life unfolds.

Our job is to take what we are given and build the best life we can with what we have at the time with gratitude, love, acceptance and joy.  This does not mean we take negatives lying down.  It does not mean we don’t try, hope, plan and have desire.  It does mean however that certain things are not always within our control and we often need to let go and surrender to the divine purpose of our life as it unfolds day by day, year by year.

RBGC Junior Director Blog

On Sunday 10th April, Redland Bay Golf Club Juniors visited Mt Warren Park for the Redland Bay vs Mt Warren Park Junior Shield event.  I would like to thank Mt Warren Park Golf Club officials for the welcome and the effort to support junior golf in this district with a less competitive but more inclusive form of team golf.

With no handicap restriction, all the kids get a chance to represent their respective clubs and they all demonstrate a great deal of pride in the club. They also support their team mates and manage to have a bit of fun.  I am very proud of our boys as they have shown respect for the Mt Warren Park team and themselves. The result on the day was a very good effort from Mt Warren Park, however, congratulations once again to the Redland Bay Juniors.  A very convincing win - well done boys!

In closing, I would like to acknowledge Ken Scott for his most generous contribution to our Juniors.  Ken’s private circumstances have determined that he may not continue his membership, which is very unfortunate.  Ken is the most unassuming, interesting and pleasant individual that I have had the pleasure to play golf with.  Thank you Ken Scott for the gift and your company.

Tip for your own lawn:
Now is your last chance to have a healthy lawn before winter. Now is the time to fertilize with a complete ratio of 12N - 3P - 10 K fertilizer. You will see the difference that this makes!

The past 6 months have certainly been a challenging period with the weather patterns experienced. Considering the substantial amount of rain the course has received over this period and the less than ideal heat and sunlight, it is holding up very well and is in great shape. We lightly dusted the greens last week and ideally needed dry weather after this process. However, that was not the case. This rain has also affeected all bunkers on course but we are endeavouring to get these back to standard as soon as possible.

I will bring news regarding the course and activity you will see in coming blogs to keep you abreast of the tasks that we are undertaking to keep your course in fantastic shape.

Thought of the Day

One of the hardest things for people to do is to compromise their needs, expectations, wants, desires, values and beliefs.  I am not suggesting that any of these are wrong or need to change.  I am suggesting however, that if your unwillingness to be flexible with any of them – other than those that are entrenched in your DNA – you will experience a great deal of frustration, anxiety, stress, resentment and even anger toward others.

RBGC Captains Blog

Captain’s Blog
Golf Queensland is conducting two Club Level Rules Accreditation seminars for those members and visitors who wish to brush up on their knowledge of the Rules of Golf at the Redland Bay Golf Club on 10th and 17th May.  This seminar is free for RBGC members.  See below for more details.

Friday Sweepstakes – This is a 9 hole event  played on a Friday afternoon and is open to all members and visitors with an AGU handicap.  The tee-off time slot is 1.30pm to 2.30pm.  You do not have to book a time to tee-off in this time slot, however, if you choose to play earlier you must contact the Pro-Shop to book in.

BBQ after Sunday Competition   The Club will soon be trialing a barbecue once a month after Sunday’s comp.  A late afternoon barbeque on the deck with that amazing view will be a great way to unwind and catch up with friends after an enjoyable day of golf.  Remember, this is only a trial, and it’s success will depend on your support.
