RBGC Managers Report May 2011

I would like to thank those members that responded to the recent survey emailed out last week. I find the results very pleasing as the majority of members have provided constructive feedback on the club’s operations and ideas as to how we can improve. As normal, there are always a small amount of comments made that are unnecessary but everybody is entitled to an opinion. The club will focus on those comments that are constructive in nature.
I will compare results from the 2010 survey with the current survey where possible, however, there were questions that are unique to 2011 alone, so comparison will not be possible in these instances:
·         Female respondents reduced from32% in 2010 to 13.5% in 2011
·         Respondents age range majority is 55 – 69 being 55%
·         52% of respondents dine at the club less than once per month or never!
·         22% of respondents dine at the club once a week or more
·         14% of respondents  were unaware that the club hosts Comedy Trivia every Wednesday
·         41% of respondents have been members for over 10 years
·         20% of respondents would like to have Theme Nights (ie. Mexican food, Indian food etc); 18% Live entertainment; 17% Interactive dinner shows; 17% wine dinners. 10% are not interested in club events.
·         70% of respondents were aware that we run a Kids Club on Wed & Thurs nights
·         10% of respondents were unaware that members receive 2 for 1 dining on Thursdays
·         5% of respondents were unaware of members pricing
·         22% of respondents were unaware of the 7 Day Membership Give Away currently running at the club even though it was advertised on the email that contained the survey link.
·         Only 33% of respondents have visited the club blog site – www.redlandbaygolf.blogspot.com
·         85% of respondents play 80 – 100% of their golf at RBGC; 73% in 2010
·         48% play more than once per week; 51% in 2010
·         22% enjoy all golfing events. 17% don’t like novelty events; 15% don’t like single v par; 12% don’t like foursomes. Similar result to 2010
·         85% of respondents commented that the greens are very good to outstanding (86% in 2010); 80% - fairways are very good to outstanding (82% in 2010); 93% - rough is average to very good (47% very good)(89% in 2010 with 37% commenting very good); 44% - bunkers are average or above (53% in 2010); 83% - garden areas are very good to outstanding (82% in 2010).
·         97.2% of respondents commented that value of membership is above average (51% very good). (96.9% in 2010)
·         95% of respondents will be renewing their membership of RBGC. (89% in 2010)
·         21% of respondents were unaware of our pay by the month facility for membership. (23% in 2010)
·         50% of respondents have not played in a Rydges Black Marker Challenge
·         98.2% of respondents would encourage family and friends to visit RBGC. (97.7% in 2010)
·         93% of respondents are satisfied with the communication now delivered by the club.
Once again, a huge thank you to all those members who took the time to complete this survey. The constructive comments will certainly be addressed and analysed to see how we can improve the product to members and guests in the future. I will advise of further implementations regarding these comments.

RBGC President May Blog

It has been a busy month again for the Club.

We have received wonderful feedback from members and guests on the new menu released this month. I encourage you to call, make a booking, and enjoy the quality menu on offer.
The Board implemented a membership drive this half of the financial year. To date, it has been successful with 28 new members in the past five weeks.

The Club has ridden the roller coaster ride with wet weather, thanks to the grounds staff under Max Laverty's management on their ability to provide a quality course to members and guests for the majority of the time. The couse may be wet at times, but generally, still playable for the full 18 holes. As winter approaches, we need to care for the course during the non growing season. We may need to review our use of carts on the course if wet weather comtinues.
Clubhouse activities have provided a considerable support to the club's financial position with functions and members nights. these include:
  • Birthday cards sent to all members as their birthday approaches. The first of the monthly Birthday Dinners will be held on Friday,10 June. Join us.
  • Membership giveaways
  • Comedy Night on 17 June and the FREE Johnny Cash Tribute Show on 15 July. The show is free to all members who dine at the Club that night. Bookings are essential.
  • Bookings for the following months include 24 weddings, 6 parties and 6 members events.
The Board plan to hold a Strategic Planning session this month to review past performance, plan for the coming year, and long term strategies and goals.

Wet v's Dry????

Wet v's Dry......

What is the extreme occurring in the region - H20 (water)!!!! South East Queensland has not only witness the worst floods in over 30 years but we are continually being inundated with rainfall during April and May resulting in historic rainfall amounts. This certainly puts the decisions we make in the golf and turf industries into perspective. From a golf course maintenance standpoint, the preference is to control the water applied to a course so drier is nearly always better. For golf courses, the effects of drought can really only be seen in non-irrigated areas.

Since wet conditions cause many more turfgrass maladies than dry, some of the consequences from too much H20 resulting in waterlogged soils lead to:
·         Lack of soil oxygen
·         Root dieback / shallow root system
·         Reduced root uptake of nutrients and water
·         Accumulation of toxic soil gases
·         Reduced rate of natural organic matter decomposition
·         Greater fungal disease pressure
·         Increased compaction proneness to traffic

RBGC Finance Director's Blog for May

It is with great pleasure that I report on April’s financial performance of the club. It was a poor month weather wise with the course receiving approx. 212mm of rain on an already saturated course. This in turn severely affected competition and social rounds along with the cancellation of a corporate day. The lack of play has a significant spin off effect on bar, bistro and gaming trade. The public holiday’s and subsequent penalty rates in April also put a strain on the club. There was also a carryover of invoices to April 2011 that should have fallen in March due to wanting to be able to report on March’s result at the Special General Meeting held on 5 April 2011. However, with these factors and the other financial commitments that impacted the club in April, we still managed to report a healthy profit of $6667.00 (YTD $37336.00). This is a fantastic result and all management and staff should be congratulated on this effort. It is clear to see that the function and dining activities at the club are providing great results for the club. I hope that all our members continue to support these parts of the club. The membership drive undertaken at the club is also proving very successful with 25 new members joining the club over the past 6 weeks. Thank you to those members that have provided leads to the staff to follow up on.

Some key points from the April 2011 Profit & Loss Statement:

Wages are below the parameters set by the board at 28.8% for April.
  • Competition fees and social green fees are down on budgeted forecast. Down 12% YTD (down $60927.00)
  • The kitchen made a loss of $5149.00. Carryover of invoices from March affected this result. ($22502.00 profit YTD)
  • Bar revenue is up $5000 on budgeted figure for month. YTD shows a small increase on previous year
  • Gaming revenue increased 25.4% to April 2010. However, payouts YTD up 21.4%
  • Cost of Special General Meeting $7500.00
  • All expenses are in line with budgeted figures
There are many clubs in SEQ that are in crisis due to the extreme conditions that have been dealt out over this financial year. However, I think it is fair to say that our club is performing very well due to the measures that have been implemented by the board and management.

Regards,
Tony Stanton
Finance Director

Grounds Director Blog

I know a lot of members feel that perhaps there were days that carts probably should not be on the course, so believe me when I tell you that there is not one person who worries about our course more than me.  But after saying that, I have proven that the course will recover and I bet there are a few golf clubs who are struggling now are sorry that they did not maximise their income.

To avoid a lot of damage to the course during wet weather, please drive abreast rather than behind each other and drive just above walking speed.  As the colder months and rain approaches, there will be times when no carts will be allowed. We now have are own springs on course that are going to take some time to go away so please watch when in a cart and try to avoid them. We all really need to think and have maximum only two carts per group and I know that is not always easy but when possible please do so.

I am a little dismayed that it appears there are not to many members carrying pitch repairers any more and a fair few not filling divots. I believe that you by reading this article are not responsible because you care by taking the time to read this report, and I also believe that if one is in a group it is your duty to politely tell any playing partners to do the right thing (like carrying a sand bucket, fill divot, fix pitch mark and not to drive in certain area's) and that alone would be a big help.

I have made a sign post at the front of the first tee which I believe will be a lot better knowing about the day. Thank you Tony Stanton for recognizing our girls Margaret and Joan on the wonderful job they are doing.  They have now become very important members of our team.

The worst parts of our course are the ends and starts of paths. We are aware of this and they will be attended to as quickly as possible.  It is not only where carts go but also where the walkers go.  Any place where you funnel into one space is the same. Good Golfing.

Stay Tuned Col. Truswell.

Ball Marks - An Old Nemesis
Ball marks are always a hot topic with golfers and superintendents so we have added a link below to a video that details the correct steps required to repair a pitch mark. Please view and repair the marks you create.
