Control your emotions

The ability to control your emotions and take full responsibility for your life and its opportunities and dramas is one of the key skills necessary for success, balance and happiness. There may be times during life when it is appropriate to feel guilt, anger, resentment, fear, jealousy, disappointment, grief, insecure, blame and hundreds of other feelings due either to your belief system and values or the circumstances and people that life throws in your path. Some people have the ability to experience these various emotions and then let them go quickly leaving no long-term negative residual effects. Other’s, on the other hand seem to remain stuck in any one of these negative emotions, to their detriment, I might add. Emotional maturity is the ability to see life clearly. To deal in - what is. Not what can be or was or what you want it to be.

A consistent standard and outlook - Treat and speak to people the way that you expect to be treated or spoken to!

RBGC Presidents Report for July 2011

As the end of the financial year upon us, we can reflect on what I would consider to be a successful year under the circumstances.

We are fortunate to have avoided the losses some of our neighbouring Clubs have incurred due to the wet weather.

After losing over $70,000 in green and competition fees due to wet weather and a similar amount from abnormal payouts on gaming, the Club is expected to finish with a profit for the year, a situation that appeared unlikely around Christmas.

This is mainly due to the excellent work our Manager, Aaron Muirhead, with the support of the Board, has done in attracting weddings and functions and organising members and visitors promotions.

In addition, the Club has continued to improve our dining experience with menu variations and dining promotions was has attracted increased clubhouse dining patronage. It would also be remiss of me not to thank our chef, Peter Thomas, for his delivery of quality meals for in-house dining and catered functions and weddings.

The Board is continuing to be proactive in management of both the Golfing and Clubhouse activities. We continue to try new activities or functions. Some will work, some don't.

We strive to continually improve our facilities (both on course and clubhouse) in order to offer our members and visitors excellent facilities and quality service.

RBGC Juniors Report July 2011

Congratulations to Tom Callender, who has been promoted from Cadet to Junior Member.  Remember the name.  This young fellow has some potential. And welcome back to Junior Member Matt Lewis.
We have been trying to get the Juniors to Gainsborough Greens since last Christmas, and thanks to our manager, we were able to get there on the 5th of this month. Aaron put in a great effort in organising this event. We could not have been made more welcome at Gainsborough Greens and I thank the management, kitchen, club house and professional staff for a wonderful day.  Our Juniors played some very good golf on a difficult course, in particular Daniel Ameer-Beg, who managed to par the course.  Congratulations Daniel for a very good round of golf.
I am also pleased to advise that we received very good reports back from Gainsborough Greens about the conduct and behavior of our Juniors and I would like to thanks the boys for that. It’s a nice reward for the efforts of those involved with our Juniors and Cadets, particularly Shannon Beck, who ensures respect for the game and our golf club. To have recognition and acknowledgement from a club such as Gainsborough Greens is something we can all be proud of.  Once again thank you boys.
Sunday the 17th July is the first round of the Junior Club Championships.  The second round is on Sunday 24th July and the top 8 will qualify for the Junior Matchplay Championship.  The first round of the Junior Matchplay Champtionships will be 7th August, second will be 14th August and will conclude on the 21st August.
I sincerely wish all the Juniors the best for these events.  I can’t predict a likely winner this year, it could be anyone of at least six.

Finance Directors Report for June 2011

The June trading and profit result was a good news story  for our Club.

Turnover on Bar and Kitchen were well up on the same month last year. With good weather on our side we also saw Competition fees and Social Fees show a reasonable increase over the same period.

Wages and salaries continue to be in line with the Board’s parameters.

The overall result was a profit of $19,848 for the month.

Final figures for the full financial  year will be announced in the coming weeks.

You may be interested to know that for the month of June the club had 3 weddings, 2 Birthday functions. We also had a successful Corporate golf day. Add to this the comedy night and you can see that every effort is being made to increase revenue to the Club. Congratulations to Aaron and all his team on a job well done!

Aaron and  team are continually looking at ways to bring more members and guests to our Club. The dining numbers continue to grow and we will need to look at improving our kitchen facility if we are to maintain service levels expected by all  members and guests.

In other great news, the Club  received  the approval of our request for a grant for a new course sprayer. This grant  from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund will save the club  $31,818. It was very well received by Col Truswell, along with  Max and his team .They will no longer have to do running repairs to the current sprayer which urgently needed to be upgraded.

With the course in such great condition and with the Clubhouse being utilised by lots of members and guests we are on solid footing for the year ahead. As a Board we are focused on improving your experience on and off the course. We value your ongoing  support!

RBGC Managers Report July 2011

The financial year 2010/2011 again saw the club industry straining to combat poor trading conditions bought on by extreme weather conditions, with Redland Bay Golf Club certainly suffering a similar fate to other clubs but by no means as bad as some others, with revenue proving difficult to improve or even maintain, especially over the Christmas period.  I am pleased to report that our club has come out the other side in a very strong position detailed in more detail in the Finance Directors report, further enhancing our business sustainability. Our club has achieved further ‘insulation’ against market volatility with our measured approach to procuring more functions, weddings and corporate golf.

I am also pleased to announce that early this month we were notified from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund that the club has been successful with a grant application of $31,818.18 to purchase a much needed Toro Spray Rig for the course. This piece of equipment will ensure superior spray targeting that will result in no wasted chemical, saving money and the environment and will assist the greens staff in everyday activities. Securing this grant is fantastic for the club as it ensures that the quality of playing surface is maintained for members and guests.

The club has now implemented many new activities for golf members to enjoy and to hopefully increase participation within your clubhouse such as:
·         Members Birthday Dinner once a month for those members celebrating their birthday in that specific month
·         Golf Improvers Club – Giving members the opportunity to improve their golf game and to meet other club members
·         Golfing Members Loyalty Club -  acknowledging and celebrating our golfing members by hosting a monthly ‘Golfing Members Loyalty Club’ party.  Each month, a different group (Based on years as a member) of Redland Bay Golf Club will be invited, along with new golfing members that have joined Redland Bay Golf Club in the last month
·          Regular entertainment nights such as the tribute shows recently performed with fantastic attendance from supportive members
·          Members Birthday cards with vouchers attached
·          And don’t forget about the chance to win a year’s membership at the club with the draw taking place on Friday, 9 September 2011.

The “Bay Golf” cards have now been mailed out to our Full time & part time golfing members with details attached of when they can be used. It gives you the opportunity to visit the other participating clubs by only paying the daily competition fee. Check the website home page for more details. Also inserted into the envelope containing the “Bay Golf” card was a page for member details. To help us keep your information current on our system, please fill that form out and return to the office.

On a disturbing note, it seems that a small group of members believe that it is acceptable to abuse, ridicule or speak condescendingly to  Redland Bay Golf Club staff members. This behavior is not acceptable under any circumstances. Speak and treat staff the way that you expect to be spoken to and treated!

Practice like a Pro

Practice Like A Pro

Randomly scattered divots (on the left) remove up to 50% more turf than practicing in a linear pattern (on the right) where each new shot is placed directly behind the previous divot.

Implementing this simple divot pattern into your practice regime has significant season-long implications on our practice range.  So, rather than voice a complaint about the turf during winter conditions in July and August, do the turf a favor and practice like a pro!

RBGC receives Grant

I am pleased to advise that RBGC has again been successful with a grant application submitted to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for the sum of $31,818.18 for a new TORO Spray Rig. This piece of equipment will ensure superior spray targeting that will result in no wasted chemical, saving money and the environment and will assist the greens staff in everyday activities. Securing this grant is fantastic for the club as it ensures that the quality of playing surface is maintained for members and guests.

Water Wise

"Being Water Wise" is a current government focus bought on by the drought period witnessed in Australia a few years ago so this article is to assist in this area.
The amount of water you need to keep your lawn lush can be reduced if you water intelligently. There is however, no simple answer about how frequently to water: it depends on how hot and windy the area is, the depth and type of soil and the type of grass you have. However there are a few tips can help lead you down the right path:
Tip 1: Water deeply when it is allowed - deep soakings will establish a deep root system, meaning the roots are less vulnerable to drying out.
Tip 2: Aim to get the water down about 25mm below the roots, a soaker hose or low volume irrigation is best to achieve this.
Tip 3: The best time to water is early in the morning when less water is lost through evaporation. Watering in the evening means the lawn remains wet, which can encourage disease.
Tip 4: Choose a drought resistant turf grass that requires minimal water to survive, Couch grass or Baffalo Grass would be a great choice and adapts well to the Australian climate.
GOOD GROWING!

SENIOR CLUB TEAM CHALLENGE 2011 OVERVIEW

Once again our club was represented in the Senior Club Teams Challenge an event sanctioned and run by Golf Queensland. It’s the 4th year we have participated in this event along with 17 other clubs from the greater Brisbane area. We were represented in Division 2 which included Brisbane, Indooroopilly, Virginia, Pacific and Wynnum. All of these Clubs have a proud tradition when it comes to match play.

It is with great pride I report our guys excelled. We started the season with 3 good results, a draw against Wynnum and wins against Pacific and Indooroopilly. The win against Indooroopilly at home (4 ½ to 1 ½)  was a great day for the boys, as Indooroopilly along with Brisbane, were equal favourites to take the ‘lollies’ in our division

Unfortunately for us that win ‘got the attention’ of Virginia and Brisbane and when they played us they rolled out their ‘big guns’ and on each occasion gave us a bit of a touch up. Gee it’s great to know this bunch of  “old farts” still have the power to incite fear in the minds of our opposition.

From our early success we lost our next 3 matches, away games at Virginia, Wynnum and Indooroopilly, however the following 2 matches were good for the boys – 5 and 1 win over Pacific and 3 all draw against Virginia - excellent results.

We played our final match Thursday 7th against Brisbane at home. The boys went into the match confident we could come away with a win and they didn’t disappoint – we won 3 ½ to 2 ½ a fantastic result as Brisbane dished out our worst loss of the season when we played them at home. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to support us in our final game.

Our guys represented the club with pride and the team finished 4th which is a great result considering the level of competition.

Personally I thank everyone who participated and gave their time so willingly to represent the Club. I am sure I can speak for the team in saying we look forward to next year’s Challenge.

The guys who represent the club were: John Eagleton, John Fletcher, Tony Squires, Peter Monks, Ron Carr, Jim Tarlinton, Garry Waugh, Col Truswell, Ron Gould, Andrew Maxwell, Errol Zagami, Bruce Colvin and Kerry Cooper

Details and results can be found on the Golf Queensland website – http://www.golfqueensland.org.au/2011-senior-club-team-challenge/results

Overview of the Shark!

Greg Norman from Australia is labeled as Great White Shark. He started playing golf at the age of 15. His interest in golf started when he started as a caddy to his mother during her regular mid week game. He started by borrowing her clubs and setting out on his own. He is admired as a sportsman and businessman, who have transcended the game to become the most successful athlete turned entrepreneur in history.

Golf Swing

Greg Norman Grip
His grip is not of any one style but the one that is comfortable for him. His way of checking the best grip is by clapping his hands. He takes a stance without a club and allows hands and arms to hang naturally. Then he brings together hands, palms in flat position, parallel to each other. The palms position is the soundest grip and allows the hands to work as one unit instead of fighting each other. He assumes the usual grip on the club and straightens fingers while continuing to hold the club between the palms.
In case of an ideal neutral grip, the back of left hand and the palm of right hand should be facing the target. With a slight weak grip, the alignment is to be towards the ground. The strong grip will be tilted towards the sky. Both these grips are used by Greg Norman keeping the palms parallel.

Greg Norman Stance
According to Greg Norman, the ball does not have to move to accommodate different clubs. He believes in single ball position regardless of the club used. Changing ball position changes the swing at which the contact is made with the ball.
He positions the ball at the point just the back of his left heel. This is the most comfortable position that works best for him. He keeps a close tab on his golf ball positions. He monitors his alignment and ball position at the same time. For this, he has a mental picture of the correct alignment. He knows he is in the proper position when he sees the back thumb pad on left hand and covers the instep. He makes sure that this picture is complete for every swing. In case it is not, he aligns the ball and body accordingly.

Greg Norman’s Particular style
Greg Norman is the model for modern power players of Golf. Norman has a swing that is athletic and fundamentally sound. None of the golf players were straight and long as him in his times or before that. He prefers draws and has all the shots. Some people would say that he puts spin on the ball with his irons. He is the purest of the ball strikers the game of golf has ever known.
His left wrist is flat and an upright or flat swing plane. There is a great lag in the swing that enables him to compress the ball and control it while hitting it. Best of all, Greg Norman combines all his solid moves with speed and rhythm. This is his particular style and he did this with consistently.

Membership Update July 2011

Membership at Redland Bay Golf Club has remained very strong for the 2010-2011 period despite all the factors affecting clubs ie. rain, floods, increased cost of living etc. From July 2010 to the end of June 2011, the club is only down 1 adult member which is a fantastic result in these times. All membership categories are currently open and there is no joining fees. Subscriptions notices will be mailed out in the coming weeks and will be due for payment prior to the end of September 2011.

As an added extra to your membership at the Redland Bay Golf Club, "Bay Golf" cards are currently being mailed out which entitles you to play at the participating golf courses (Nudgee, Bribie & Wynnum) in the selected events by only paying the daily competition fee.

Another initiative commencing next month at the club is the "Golfing Members Loyalty Club. We would like to acknowledge and celebrate our golfing members by hosting a monthly ‘Golfing Members Loyalty Club’ party.  Each month, a different group of Redland Bay Golf Club golfing members will be invited, along with new golfing members that have joined Redland Bay Golf Club in the last month.

This month, invitations will be sent to golfing members that fall into the category of 21+ years of golfing membership. The members that fall into this category will be invited along with your partner to join us and other members on Friday, 29 July from 6.00pm to 7.30pm.  You are also welcome to bring two guests (non members) to the club on this night to introduce them to the hospitality and facilities of this wonderful club.On the night you will each receive a FREE glass of bubbly on arrival, complimentary cocktail style nibblies and you will have the opportunity to meet fellow golfing members of Redland Bay Golf Club.
