Qld Seniors PGA Championship 2011 Results
Playoff success for Merriman at QLD PGA
After birdying both playoff holes, David Merriman has taken out the 2011 QLD Senior PGA Championship at Redland Bay Golf Club.
The leaderboard was bunched heading into the final round with three players tied at 5 under par including Brett Officer, David Merriman and current EZ-GO Player of the Year leader Jim Lapsley. With 19 players within 5 shots of the lead though, it was still anyone’s tournament.
David Good birdied the final two holes in the second round after an opening round of 70 to get to 7 under par for the tournament, setting a total for the leaders to catch. Lapsley started the day in good form though thought his chances were blown when he made a soft bogey on the par five 18th Hole to also fall back to 7 under par, and when Merriman also finished on the same score, a three way playoff beckoned.
Both Lapsley and Merriman recorded birdies on the first playoff hole with Good’s par not quite enough to keep him in the race for the title. As he has done the entire QLD Swing of the EZ-GO Legends Tour, Jim Lapsley drove it in great position on the second playoff hole though after missing the well green right, it was left to Merriman to tap in a four foot putt for birdie and claim victory.
“I certainly felt a bit nervous in the playoff and to be truthful I think that shows just how much I wanted to win” said Merriman and in talking about the Legends Tour, Merriman added, “This tournament is the perfect end to what has been a great swing of events. The QLD PGA Seniors Championship is always a title you want your name on and I feel honoured to have mine on it given the calibre of players in the field this year”.
The scores over past few weeks are indicative of the great players who continue to play the EZ-GO PGA Legends Tour and Redland Bay General Manager Aaron Muirhead has been very impressed with the professionals. “I guess when we liken golf to other sports, Wally Lewis couldn’t run out for the Bronco’s this weekend and compete anywhere near the level would need, and Dawn Fraser couldn’t swim nearly as fast as what she once did but the PGA Legends still have it in them to shoot the same scores they did in their prime, and that’s the difference.
The EZ-GO PGA Legends Tour now heads to Victoria in a little over a month, starting at the awnetplus.com Legends Charity Pro Am at the National Golf Club on the 22nd September.
A huge thank you to the event sponsors, members and visitors that palyed in the event and all the spectators that provided extra atmosphere to this exclusive tournament.

Fund raising by a RBGC Bar Supervisor
One of our club bar supervisors, Rochelle Lewis is running Bridge to Brisbane on the 11/09/2011 which is a 10km run. She is aiming to complete it under 85mins. On the side, Rochelle is helping to raise money for BABI Youth and Family Services Homelessness program (http://www.babi.org.au/donate.htm) that sight page just explains what they need funding for. And all money raised will go to BABI on the 12/09. Good luck Rochelle and we hope you raise plenty for this worthy cause.

As I do not intend nominating for re-election as Captain at this month’s AGM, this will be my last blog contribution. This form of communication, along with The Bunker and e-News emails, is one of the great initiatives by our Club to keep in touch with its members. I hope you continue to log on and keep informed with what’s happening in and around your Club.
